About the Author

Axel Andersson and Scott Magelssen

Axel Andersson is a Swedish writer and art critic, currently editor-in-chief at Kritiklabbet, Stockholm. He earned his PhD in History at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, 2007. He is the author of A Hero for the Atomic Age: Thor Heyerdahl and the Kon-Tiki Expedition (Peter Lang, 2010), and has since contributed writings on cultural history, media theory and cinema to a number of scholarly anthologies and journals. He the author most recently of Den koloniala simskolan [The Colonial School of Swimming] (Glänta Produktion, 2016), which traces the disappearance and return, via colonial locales, of the crawl swimming technique. His work often investigates the performative dimension of media and its intersection with narrations of identity. In 2015, Andersson began a collaboration with Scott Magelssen to try frame and understand how the Nordic identity has been performed as an Atlantic story of interactions and connections.

Scott Magelssen is Associate Professor and the Director of the Center for Performance Studies in the School of Drama at the University of Washington, where he heads the BA academic program. He is the author of Simming: Participatory Performance and the Making of Meaning (University of Michigan Press, 2014) and Living History Museums: Undoing History Through Performance (Scarecrow, 2007). With Henry Bial, he edited the collection Theatre Historiography: Critical Interventions (University of Michigan Press, 2010). He edited Enacting History with Rhona Justice Malloy (University of Alabama Press, 2011), and Querying Difference in Theatre History with Ann Haugo (Cambridge Scholars, 2007). Scott is the editor of Southern Illinois University Press’s Theater in the Americas series and hosts the website theater-historiography.org with Henry Bial.
